Have you ever visited the walled garden of Rachel Mellon in Upperville, Virginia? My impression is of another time and place. Although the home and garden were built in the 1950’s, the architectural stonework and carefully organized garden beds remind me of Monticello or the Biltmore estate, though smaller. Yes, there is a feeling of intimacy with nature, a chance to communicate with flora and fauna without the distractions of the 21st Century.
